Abstract

This work investigated the implementation of an English Medium Instruction (EMI) discipline in an engineering undergraduate course in a public educational institution. Among the reasons for the EMI increase around the world are: to better prepare students for the global job market, to raise the institution profile and to attract international students (DOIZ ET AL, 2016). In this investigation, which can be methodologically classified as a case study, questionnaires were applied to the students and professor and documents and guidelines on the institution internationalization were analyzed. Results show that participants acknowledge the EMI relevance for the students training as 20% of them decided to study more the English language before starting the EMI classes and 60% of the students intend to enroll other disciplines taught in English. On the other hand, 60% of the students claimed they would probably have reached better results if the classes had been taught in Portuguese language.
