Against the order: the irrelevance of the phrasal order for an ontogenic Syntax

Abstract

I intend to restrict the statute of the sentence to the scope of Discourse rather than the Syntax. I propose that the possible phrasal constituents are ordered according to a discursive criteria, not a syntactic one. Thus, I mention constituents as “words”, not as syntagms, referring to the expression “word order in the sentence”, highly circulating and subdued to a syntactic-structural relevance, against which I argue, to which I owe the title of this paper. I circumscribe what I call “sentence space” to the discourse, taking advantage of a theoretical proposition I have been trying to develop related to the “ontogenesis” or “ontogeny” of the Language — treated here as a single entity, to which I refer as a singular, capitalized word —, from a primeval moment when the physical space of the world and the cinematic movements made in it would have been realized and embedded, and mimicked by us as an inspiring factor for the making of the Language. This is the ultimate scope of this article: more than relativization of the importance of the “space in the sentence”, it is the proposition of a founding relevance of the “space of the world” for the genesis of the Language.
