The intensifying microconstruction [com força] in Brazilian Portuguese: an analysis based on a constructional perspective

The aim of this article is to analyze, based on the theoretical assumptions of the cognitive-functional approach of Bybee (2010, 2016) and Traugott and Trousdale (2013), the intensifying microconstruction [com força], instantiated by the constructional subschema [[X] prep N ]intensif in Brazilian Portuguese, which can modify both verbal predicates, as in [amar com força] and [correr com força], and adjectival predicates, as in [ruim com força] and [feio com força]. More specifically, the aim is to describe and analyze the process of formation of the microconstruction [com força] in Portuguese grammar, taking into account its compositionality (the microconstruction can convey manner and intensity) and its schematic relationship to the constructional subschema [[X] prep. N] in terms of attraction and productivity. For data collection and analysis, we used the “Historical/Gender” and “Web/Dialects” subsamples of the Corpus do Português (DAVIES; FERREIRA, 2006) referring to the centuries from the 13th to the 21st.
