Abstract

The history of linguistics is usually narrated as a series of “revolutions” in which a new paradigm would completely replace its predecessor, whose work should be left aside from current developments. By resorting to an analysis of the entry on etymology in the 18th century Encyclopedia of the French Enlightenment, it is possible to deny this supposed linearity of theoretical and methodological advances in linguistics and recognize that they occur by accumulation and cyclical unfoldings, never abruptly.
