Abstract

This article describes three approaches to teaching advanced academic genres to post-graduate students and scholars, particularly those in the disciplines of education, psychology and science/engineering. These approaches grow out of social practice approaches to understanding and teaching academic writing, which align well with genre theories of writing. The article discusses the topics of a series of writing workshops offered to graduate students in education, a genre-based course, “Communicating Science,” for PhD students in science/engineering, and a heuristics approach to supporting scholars in writing for publication.
