Abstract

We hereby present a research conducted with 23 Portuguese language teachers in a city nearby São Paulo. The aim was to investigate the memories of their first experiences in the school environment, in order to identify the factors which contribute to appreciate or not the school. We took into consideration Vygotsky’s ideas about the intrinsic relation between cognition and affectivity, as well as the constructs of content analysis based on Bardin (2010). Therefore, to reach our aim we presented the subjects with the following questions: When you were a child, did you like to go to the school? Why? Which factors did you like or dislike? According to our analysis of the answers, we verified different meanings for the word ‘school’. We assumed these results indicate important elements which will contribute to a more pleasing and meaningful learning process at school.
