Abstract

In this article, we aim to identify which skills and difficulties are presented by inexperienced student writers from the Portuguese Language course at the State University of Ceará. We are theoretically based on the studies of Lea and Street (1998), Street (1984), Lillis and Scott (2007) on academic literacy practices; and in the studies of Carlino (2005), Lillis (2003), Hyland (2000), Motta-Roth and Hendges (2010) among others that deal with academic writing. The method is an exploratory case study, with 12 students of the Portuguese Language course who participated in semi-structured interviews. The analysis of the data and the results lead us to a reflection on the need for some adjustments in the teaching process, learning academic writing in literacy events and practices, mainly from three axes: the institutional, the curricular, and the methodological.
