Abstract

The aim of this paper is to examine, based on the Functional Discourse Grammar (HENGEVELD; MACKENZIE, 2008), the behavior of noun phrases with non-canonical orderings of their constituent parts, called discontinuous by Keizer (2007), as well as to investigate the motivations that activate discontinuity. To this end, two ordering principles are chosen: structural complexity and communicative weight. Both may favor the same order, but when they come into competition and favor different orders, the speaker will select the order that best fulfills their communicative purpose. From data extracted from the IBORUNA corpus, 77 occurrences of discontinuous noun phrases were analyzed. The result of the analysis points to the prevalence of the communicative weight principle in determining the order of the NP constituents.
