This paper proposes a Functional Discourse Grammar analysis of the periphrasis ainda mais that reflects its communicative functions, its internal constituent structure and its lexical-grammatical status. Based on real occurrences of contemporary Portuguese taken from Córpus do Português (Davies; Ferreira, 2006), the aim here is to describe functional and formal properties underlying the use of ainda mais. The results show that ainda mais, as a fixed form, can be taken as an absolute scalar particle (Schwenter, 2000) and, in FDG terms, corresponds to a single grammatical primitive in the Interpersonal Level, specifically a Selecting Contrast pragmatic function that applies, in terms of scope relations, to Subacts and to Communicated Contents.Downloads
