Memory and discourse: the construction of the striker teacher from journalistic editorial

This article approaches, from the viewpoint of memory, discourses about teachers’ strikes from São Paulo that circulated in editorials of a newspaper of great Brazilian relevance, Folha de S. Paulo in its printed version. The aim of this work is to demonstrate how the discourse in the newspaper during the teachers' strikes in São Paulo state construct a memory of the teachers’ strike culture in the state. And, from this culture, it is desired to perceive how is the construction of meanings and value judgments referring to the image of the striker teacher. For that, we have analyzed editorials published since the first São Paulo strike in 1963 until the teachers’ strike of 2015. The interpretation course of the study consists in mobilizing concepts discussed by Bakhtin and the Circle and contemporary studies of Marilia Amorim about the object memory. The analyzes suggest that the strike culture constituted by Folha's discourse-making points to the evaluation of the teacher initially as an orderly category with legitimate demands and, throughout the constitution of the culture, there is a re-evaluation of the teachers as disjointed, acting with political objectives and in a uncommitted manner committed to education.
