Conflicting voices: what the National Curriculum Parameters say and what second language students expect
Keywords:
second language teaching and learning, national curriculum parameters, english language representations, the french theory of discourse analysis.Abstract
The purpose of this study is to offer support to the aims found in a national document addressed to second language teachers. This document provides some parameters regarding second language teaching. By doing so, we aim at understanding why students are not interested in English Classes taught at Regular Public High Schools and why they tend to resist such a learning process. Some of the aims taken from the National Curriculum Parameters (PCN-LE, 1998) were opposed to students’ statements, in which some representations concerning English teaching at a regular school were pointed out. The analyses developed were based on the French Theory of Discourse Analysis. Eventually, this study aims at contributing to the constant and
complex teachers education.
