This paper deals with unconventional orthographies of syllabic nasal coda produced by young people and adults in literacy process. We analyze the position of syllabic nasal coda based on five proposals on writing. We consider the different vowels that fill the syllable nucleus, the tonicity of syllables and the graphic possibilities of nasal coda in Portuguese. We observed that the unconventional orthographies found in the analysed data can be explained if we consider the path taken by the subjects from oral to literacy practices. In their writing production, the subjects have strong support in phonetic-phonological cues of spoken utterances
as in characteristics of written utterances, e.g. the orthographic conventions.
