Abstract

Translation memory systems have conquered a defi nitive space in the translator’s workstation and, consequently, they have promoted signifi cant changes in translation practice. Aiming to refl ect on the training of these tools and their infl uence on the work of trainee translators, this paper analyzes the theory and practice of translation assisted by translation memory tools in the academic environment. Some challenges faced by trainees in their fi rst contact with the tool are presented, as well as the partial results of an undergoing study of translations completed with and without the assistance of translation memories seeking to encourage the construction of a critical view of the effects of automation on translation practice.
