Abstract

This paper aims to provide an overview of oral language taught in Portuguese Language (PL) classes in the 80s and 90s. For that, it was carried out a survey of papers published at Gel Seminars Proceedings from 1978 to 1998. We found 10 papers about PL teaching, articulated with oral language, and 12 about oral language, articulated with teaching. From a deeper reading of these papers, we could observe that more importance started being attributed to oral language
in 80s, with the conversational studies. The speaking skill is slightly worked in PL classes and, according to the papers analyzed, this work is conducted in order to improve students’ writing skill. Thus, the oral language serves as an instrument that facilitates the learning and the improvement of the writing skill, which is a predominant concern in most of the papers.
