Abstract

As expressions like “medium public” and “medium man” are common in studies
about mass culture, this paper intends to identify how this “medium man” is conceived. The intent is seeing the features that our culture naturalizes up to a point where they are seen as “normal” ones. Based on the Bakhtin Circle, to which we ass considerations from Rhetoric and other theories on argumentation, we try to see the reader’s image in the journalistic genre. This image is related to how the “medium man” is imagined, because the analyzed articles are addressed to
him, as they come from the best-seller magazines in Brazil, Veja and Época. The analysis shows us that this “medium man” is not medium, but a relatively well defined stereotype of successful man in the capitalist world.
