A sociolinguistic portrait of the use of prepositions of the complement of verbs of motion in Brazilian Portuguese language spoken in the countryside of São Paulo

This paper is part of ALIP (Linguistic Sample of the Countryside of São Paulo) project studies (GONÇALVES, 2007), and features both the analyzis of variation/change phenomenon involving the prepositions a/para/em which introduce the locative complement of motion verbs (caminhar, chegar, entrar, ir, levar, mudar, partir, sair, voltar), and the discussion about the results from investigation into linguistic and extra-linguistic factors. This survey relied on a sample of 1.464 occurrences, gathered in 152 sociolinguistic interviews made for the ALIP Project. Grammaticalization and Sociolinguistic postulates support this investigation. The results show that the function of prepositions introducing locative complement for dynamic verbs work in a variation/grammaticalization continuum.
