The expression of evidentiality in journalistic genre
Keywords:
videntiality, genre, functionalism, subjectivity.Abstract
Evidentiality is a semantic-pragmatic category which refers to the expression of the source of information of the utterance. It is considered that the evidentiality is related to epistemic modality, as evidential markers specify the information validity, indicating the speaker’s sources. Evidentials operate in the realm of knowledge and express the commitment of the speaker regarding the statement. The types of evidential qualification are: direct and indirect evidentiality (inferred or reportative). This study, therefore, describes, based on functionalist assumptions, the expedients of evidentiality marking in Brazilian Portuguese, specifically in journalistic genres, as editorials, news and opinion articles which were collected in Folha de S. Paulo.
