Abstract

The aim of this paper is to discuss the theoretical convergences and the specificities intrinsic to Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL) and to Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA), in order to show in which way the analytical categories and the theoretical assumptions held by the former allow us to investigate, thoroughly, discursive-linguistic phenomena. Thus, we present a brief background on the establishment of CDA, its main concepts, highlighting the notion of discourse order and semiotic formation. In the sequence, we show the main properties of semiosis, as it is regarded in a systemic functional basis, so that the relevant approximations and divergences between the two approaches can be sketched out, allowing us to discuss the advantages of the dialogue between them.
