The modal verb ‘poder’ in spoken peninsular Spanish: a study of distinct modalities

This paper aims to analyze the modal verb ‘poder’ as an element to express distinct modalities in spoken peninsular Spanish. Based on a functionalist perspective of language — in which the real context of communication is relevant and Pragmatics holds primacy over Semantics, whereas the latter holds primacy over Syntax —, Hengeveld (2004) made a distinction between two important parameters for the study of modality: target of evaluation; semantic domain. Besides these two elements of analysis, both the characteristics of the subject of the modal verb in the utterance as well as the tense and mood of the verb have been selected. The analysis confirms the polysemy of the modal and the necessity to research into the context in which the utterance occurs.
