Abstract

This article discusses the contributions of an emic linguistic-interactional perspective to the investigation of interaction and language-in-interaction in autism. First, the assumptions of an emic perspective and the interpretive method of the participants are presented according to the field of study of Ethnomethodological Conversation Analysis. In a second moment, two interactive situations involving autistic children and non-autistic adults are analyzed, with an emphasis on how the participants deal interactionally with verbal productions that do not correspond to a conventionalized linguistic repertoire. Finally, the intersubjective maintenance of an interaction is discussed when one of the participants has limitations in verbal production and the other participant has limits in reaching the meaning of these productions.
