Abstract

The purpose of this study is to demonstrate how Jair Bolsonaro utilized the state's communication apparatus to institutionalize a discourse fundamentally based on manipulation strategies. Through the analysis of a televised and radio broadcast address, it was possible to observe that the discursive behavior of the former president of Brazil relied on the effect of imposture—that is, the projection of the subject as an agent of deceit in the political arena. The study is grounded in the theoretical and methodological framework of French Discourse Analysis, specifically the Semiolinguistic Theory and Patrick Charaudeau's studies on political discourse. It can be asserted that, in the official address, Bolsonaro disrupted the terms that grant this communication contract the status of a rhetorical Scene.
