Abstract

In this article, we discuss the standard use of relative clauses in different textual genres, based on the hypothesis that there is a correlation between the functioning of these clauses and the communicative purposes of each genre. Traditionally, these clauses are characterized by the presence of the relative pronoun and by the distinction between explicative and restrictive clauses. Based on functionalist assumptions, we studied the relative clauses in two genres of the journalistic domain, in the written modality: (1) opinion articles, of an argumentative nature, and (2) news, of a narrative nature. The results confirm our initial hypothesis, demonstrating that there is a correlation between the functioning of adjective sentences, the expressed content, the genre and the textual type in which they occur, which allows a more in-depth analysis of the standard use of these sentences.
