Abstract

This work proposes to investigate the signaling space in the Brazilian Sign Language in the tactile modality, known as Tactile Libras, used by the Brazilian deafblind community. The signaling space is the three-dimensional space where signals are performed. For people who are deafblind, signs need to be made within reach of their hands, so that they can be touched and decoded by touch. The objective of this research is to verify if the use of the signaling space in Tactile Libras is characterized or not as that of Libras. The research corpus consisted of Tactile Libras samples recorded in videos available on YouTube. We observe in Tactile Libras the existence of a reduction in the signaling space resulting from the modality effect. The results of this study indicate the occurrence of articulatory alterations in Tactile Libras signs due to the effects of this type of modality.
