Canadian translators and beyond: Feminist translation theories and practices then and now

In this paper, we present several translators and their feminine and feminist practices of translation throughout time. From the concept of translation as a regulated transformation, we discuss its intersection with feminist studies, especially in the 20th century. Although Canadian feminist translators of the eighties are until today paradigm of feminist translation, we show that various women translators – in Brazil and worldwide – before them had already considered the inferior position of women in society, by using their translations to call attention to this problem. We also discuss this Canadian feminist translation context of the eighties, explaining some of their practices and pointing out why they were criticized. Finally, we present some of the new possible approaches to Feminist Translation Studies, which is a field that needs more discussion.Downloads
