Abstract

This article aims at discussing some aspects concerning Machado de Assis’s reception of Shakespeare’s representation performed by the famous Italian actor Ernesto Rossi, in the year of 1871, in Rio de Janeiro. For this, we discuss the presence of Shakespearean drama in the city until that moment, the importance of Rossi’s presence in carioca scenery and the critical papers written by Machado on that occasion.
