Compositionality degrees: a case study with idioms and popular sayings

Abstract

This paper discusses the meaning of proverbs and idioms from a formal bias, understanding that this kind of phenomenon has metaphorical features that are necessary for their meaning. From the treatment given by formal theories of metaphor, it is possible to account this kind of expression in a formal bias. But if the meaning of these expressions can be recovered by metaphor, there is some meaning that can be captured on the compositional configuration of the expression that, although it is not the consensual meaning, can be a starting point to address the phenomenon. Thus, the compositionality of these expressions can be somewhat measured and can serve to differentiate idioms from popular sayings.
