Abstract

This article presents a discussion on two usually related phenomena in aphasia: word finding difficulties (WFD) and production of paraphasias. We first introduce the lurian neuropsychological approach, in order to show how this author understands the complexity of lexicon, more specifically of “words”. Afterwards, we bring the contributions of Linguistics, mainly the theories which conceive
words in the context of real utterances production. In order to address the theme and provide analysis which strengthens the social-cultural approaches of lexicon, we present three data of dialogical episodes in which WFD and production of paraphasias occur. We believe these data may help us understand the processes of searching/selecting and combining linguistic units in pathological and non-pathological contexts.
