Marques Rebelo and the bourgeois quotidian

Abstract

This paper aims to analyse two short stories by Marques Rebelo (1907-1973), “Oscarina” and “Onofre, o Terrível, ou a sede de justiça”, both taken from Oscarina (1931), in order to show how the writer, actually a little-known writer, shows as one of his main concerns an effective picture of the urban life in Rio de Janeiro city at the beginning of the twentieth century.This effective picture presents sometimes tragic characteristics and reveals specially the life of simple people as workmen, public employees, businessmen, etc.
