Abstract

A grammatical revision treaty about Machado de Assis´s literary production conceives the asymmetry between the category of person and subject only as an infraction of syntactic rules. That posture disregards the meanings implicated in the use of those pronouns. By problematizing a normative view, we intend to discuss the viability of creating labels for every shift of personal pronouns as a mistake. The grammatical revision treaty of Machado de Assis´s work, developed by the grammarian Lima (1973), disregards the possibility of non existent meaning problems in occurrences that possess syntactic asymmetry. In general, the grammatical treaties disregard the uttering activity. Such posture illustrates how normativity, in the context of learning and teaching, can devalued student’s linguistic constructions paying attention only to the form and the syntactic rules. The work of Lima represents the grammatical purism and, therefore, disregards that an utterance can be acceptable even if it is not in a syntactic pattern. With such a patterning difficulty in the innumerous grammars, we pose the following question: how can one demand from the students the appropriation of their texts if one deprives them of the right to operate with language. We defend, therefore, that there is a difficulty of defining a distinction, before the materialization and analysis of an utterance, if a linguistic occurrence is a subversion that derives from the ignorance of the linguistic code or if it is a creative subversion of the same linguistic code.
