Abstract

The aim of this study is mainly to map and analyze the sibilant fricatives in coda
position of the Cantigas de Santa Maria, Afonso X, the Wise King from the thirteenth- XIII century. Words containing consonants spelled with <s>, <z> and <x> in syllable-final position will be considered as object of study. From a still unexplored corpus, we intend to look into some aspects of the evolution of Portuguese language that refer to the sibilants. Thus, the importance of the
description of the relationship between letters and sounds will be shown regarding the possible medieval lyric spellings and regarding the position of the segment in the syllable.
