Abstract

This paper argues that universal quantification in Karitiana is obtained through the modification of the noun phrase by an adverbial clause. The structure of this clause includes a copular verb and a subordinator tyym, also used in temporal adverbial clauses. When the adverbial clause appears in sentence-initial position, it has, additionally, to include a pronoun to indicate co-reference with either a subject or a non-subject argument in the main clause. In this case, we consider that the adverbial clauses act as modifiers of the main clause.
