Abstract

One of the main principles of Rhetorical Structure Theory is that, besides the propositionalcontent conveyed by the clauses of a text, there are implicit prepositions which arise from the combining of clauses or of bigger text spans. Relations may be linguistically marked by discourse markers or connectives, by conversational implicatures, by the meaning of the verb, by the type of clause combining, verb tense and verb mood. The aim of this paper is to discuss two means of expression of rhetorical relations in spoken language: positive regard towards the content of the nucleus that the speaker intends to create in his addressee; sentence mood and modality.
