Intonation analysis: a comparison between Halliday’s (1970) and Pierrehumbert’s (1980) model

Abstract

This paper investigates, according to the main methods of intonation description
and from the standpoint of perceptual model of functional phonology (HALLIDAY, 1970; CAGLIARI 1982; 2007) and autosegmental phonology (PIERREHUMBERT, 1980), the relation between the perception and the physical reality of a sound in relation to the phenomenon of intonation. Our main interest is to understand whether the perception corresponds to the acoustic analysis or whether it has its own characteristics. In order to conduct this study, we also want to demonstrate that the correlation between an acoustic analysis and an auditory perception interpretation provides a better explanation of the melodic variation of the language, as well as its relation with others levels of grammar (syntax, semantics and pragmatics).
